To coincide with the United Nations’ 61st Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the inaugural UNITE Festival 2009 will be a celebration of our nation’s diversity and our united pursuit for a fairer world for all. This festival will inspire, entertain and educate all Victorians - young and old, from all cultures, classes and faiths - about how they can be part of a sustainable future that values human rights and the preservation of our planet. Over three days of fun for the whole family, we can all discover how music, art, and trade can be vehicles for achieving this goal.
The UNITE festival is on Sunday 13 December at Federation Square in Melbourne and will feature a dynamic program that includes Live Performances, Forums, Workshops, a Fair Trade Expo and Art Exhibition presented by Multicultural Arts Victoria, Moral Fair Ground and Youth For Human Rights.
Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the UNITE festival
On December 10, 1948 the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This declaration includes thirty articles by which all member nations have been called upon to publicize and promote as the foundation of freedom, justice, and peace in the world. Sixty-one years on and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a common standard of achievement for all members of our human family is one we are still yet to attain.
UNITE will bring back to the forefront this historical declaration by uniting people of all faiths, cultural and social backgrounds, from the arts, community, and corporate sectors who value human rights and the sustainability of our planet. A major publicity campaign leading up to three packed days of buzzing activity, will highlight the contemporary issues we face, that make the attainment of Human Rights as crucial today, as it was in 1948.
